One of my favorite holiday treats. Traditional Mince Pies. Don't let the name fool you, these are not made with meat ! In medieval times these pies were made from meat but this recipe evolved over the years to become the sweet, fruity and spicy treats we know and love today. Made with melt in the mouth pastry, they are lovely to have on hand, when guests call.
I have yet to see bruised fruit displayed as a centerpiece in someone’s home. Yesterday my husband asked me if I was keeping rotten pears for a reason. They were not rotten, they were bruised. Bruised fruit is delicious fruit. Once I peeled them, the juicy flesh oozed between my fingers. Nothing ever went to waste in our home and to this day I cook and bake with the same eager frugality as my mother and grandmother.
